R.I.P. Dusty 1994-2008

I lost one of my dearest friends today.

As most of you know, I was caretaker to a big black furball named Dusty. He got sick a few days ago with a "fever of unknown origin" and even after all the test and meds..he only got worse. A 20lb cat whittled down to 10lbs in nothing flat. He was lethargic and after a while even stopped trying to clean himself or eat (even when force fed). He was content to lie in the window, or on my pillow and sleep. It tore me up to see my friend so out of sorts, not getting better and looking so miserable. The vet said he was just too old to kick the fever, and there was really nothing to be done. So,..he passed peacefully tonight.

He has been my constant companion for almost 14 years. Together we have traveled from AZ to FL and back twice. We have faced all kinds of trials and triumphs together.

After a time, he ceased to be a "pet" and became a dear friend.
He knew when I was sick or sad, and did his level best to make me feel better or make me laugh.

He was "Catzilla", ...obstinate, arrogant, pushy, willful to a fault, and so conceited he would preen himself in front of our hallway mirror.

He would also cuddle up next to me either on my bed or my big chair and suck his paw and purr like a kitten. or lay all over the arm of my chair like it was Pride Rock, and he was Mufasa. He would also pet me with his tail when he was on the arm like I was HIS pet (and I'm sure that's how he saw it!). Or use it like a middle finger to flip me off when he didn't get his way. When he was a little ball of fluff, me cried himself sick and there after refused to meow louder than a whisper, and we use to joke about how he "broke his meow", and laugh at how he use to cuss me out with it whenever he got told "No", and glare at me like Cat Dracula after a midnight snack. We had our own brand of communication, he and I. We could almost read each other's minds it seemed.

Those that met him will tell you he was the ultimate, "cool kitty"

Of all the animals I've had in my life, he has had the most personality, and the most character. You've no doubt heard others refer to their pets as "Thinks he/she's people!"

Well Dusty really did.

I'll truely miss my friend.
